Leave no Trace course

Instructor - Level 2

The Leave No Trace Instructor – Level 2 course, formerly known as Leave No Trace Master Educator, is an advanced training course offered in Brazil by Gear Tips in partnership with the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics and NOLS.
This course aims to train instructors who will teach the introductory level courses (Leave No Trace Instructor Level 1), promoting practices with minimal environmental impact during outdoor activities.

Course objectives

  • Environmental Education: Teaching the principles and practices of Leave No Trace in a comprehensive way.
  • Practical Skills: Application of concepts in natural environments through theoretical and practical classes.
  • Training for Trainers: Prepare participants to educate others about ethics and sustainable practices.
  • Expansion of the CAPACITAR Program: Increase the number of certified instructors in Brazil in order to expand the supply of Leave No Trace Level 1 Instructor courses.

Prerequisites for this course

The prerequisites defined by the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics include:

  • Previous experience in outdoor activities.
  • Basic knowledge of Leave No Trace principles.
  • Previous participation in a Leave No Trace Trainer course (Level 1) or equivalent.
  • Training in first aid in remote areas, with WAFA (Wilderness Advanced First Aid) or WFA (Wilderness First Aid) certification.
Workload: 40 hours

Certificate validity: 2 years

Course structure

The five-day course is the most comprehensive offered by Leave No Trace. During the course, participants receive detailed training in Leave No Trace skills and ethics through practical application in the field.
Teaching methods include discussions, scenarios, demonstrations and practical activities. Graduates of the course are certified to teach level 1 courses and prepare others to teach Leave No Trace techniques and principles.

International partnership

This course is a joint initiative between Gear Tips, NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) and the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics, joining forces to promote environmental education and sustainability in outdoor activities.

Commitment to sustainability

The aim of bringing this unprecedented course to Brazil is to increase the number of certified instructors, thus expanding the CAPACITAR Program and promoting a culture of environmental responsibility in all outdoor activities.

Course instructors

Moaci Judson is a geographer with a degree from UFRN and has been working in the field of Outdoor Education since 2012, with experience in expeditions in Brazil and Alaska. He works as an instructor at OBB, NOLS and Gear Tips, where he teaches Minimum Impact Techniques courses and contributes to other training programs. Moaci is certified as a Wilderness First Responder (WFR), a Leave No Trace Level 2 Instructor, as well as being trained in Canyoning (Level 2) and Whitewater Rescue (WRT), among others.
